Grammar Refresher (1 session)

Wednesday, April 10
North Seattle College, 1-4 p.m., $79

Confused about grammar and punctuation? This fun, hands-on class will help you master the latest rules, avoid common errors, and write with confidence. We’ll cover apostrophes, verb tense, word usage, subject/verb agreement, commas/semicolons, style guides, how to avoid the 10 most common grammar and punctuation mistakes, and more. Class includes plenty of examples and exercises to help you practice your new skills.

Secrets of Powerful Writing (3 sessions)

Monday, April 15-29
North Seattle College, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $99

Good writing doesn’t have to be hard–not if you know the secrets! Whatever you write–emails, reports, articles, newsletters, blogs, or personal journals–you’ll benefit from being able to express yourself clearly and directly on paper. In this hands-on class you’ll learn to clarify your message, communicate complex information, avoid common mistakes, edit and proofread your writing, use proper grammar and punctuation, communicate on social and electronic media, and more.

Writing Effective Email (1 session)

Tuesday, May 7
North Seattle College, 1-4 p.m., $79

Are you buried in email? Reduce your email stress and learn to use email as an effective business communication tool. In this entertaining and informative workshop, you’ll learn to compose clear, powerful email messages, organize your inbox, use email more efficiently, know when (and when not) to send email, and avoid embarrassing email mistakes.

Writing Short Memoir (2 sessions)

Mondays, May 20 & June 3 (NOTE DATE CHANGE)
North Seattle College, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $79

Turn your life experiences—dramatic and everyday—into powerful short memoir. If you’ve wanted to write about your life but don’t have time now to tackle a book project, this class is for you! Tell the story of your life in bite-sized chunks. This class will lead you step-by-step through writing a short memoir piece: from selecting and reflecting on your experience, to writing and publishing your story. By the end of the class, you’ll have a short memoir piece ready to publish.

Business Writing Essentials (1 session)

Wednesday, June 5
North Seattle College, 1-4 p.m., $79

This course offers practical tips for producing professional-looking business documents. Learn the importance of writing for a specific audience and making the purpose and call to action clear.  Review  writing strategies for routine, persuasive, negative news, and personal messages. Then try your skill at hands-on exercises that reinforce the 5 C’s of good business writing—being concrete, clear, concise, courteous, and correct. Class will be held on campus. Write Night: Join us anytime!

Join Chris and fiction instructor Leslie Hall for Write Night, a weekly facilitated writer’s support class. Get regular feedback and create a support system for your writing life.  Write Night can become your built-in deadline and will help you write more, high-quality manuscripts.

Write Night meets Thursdays, 6:15-8:30 p.m., at the Richmond Masonic Hall, N. 185th St. & Linden Ave. N. (just a block west of Hwy 99) in Shoreline.

About Chris

Christine DuboisChristine Dubois is an award-winning writer and editor who has published more than 450 articles in 45 different magazines and newspapers. She teaches writing at North Seattle College as well as for local businesses. Her warmth, knowledge, and enthusiasm make her a popular instructor.

Dubois has successfully tackled writing projects of all types, including articles, websites, ad copy, resumes, appeal letters, advertising copy, press releases, brochures, curriculum, scripts, reports, book editing, publicity campaigns, and more.

Her professional experience includes: 10 years as Communications Director for The South 47 Farm, senior editor for View Publishing at Group Health Cooperative, assignment editor at KING-TV News, and more than 20 years as a freelance writer.

She is co-author, together with her husband, Steven E. Bourne, of “Waiting in Hope: Meditations for Expectant Parents.”

Dubois has a degree in Communications from the University of Washington and has received numerous awards from professional communications groups for excellence in writing, editing, and photography. She is a member of the National Writer’s Union.
